Hi, I'm Alicia Long, and along with my husband, John, we own and operate Copper Roost Farm. We're located in Zachary, Louisiana, which is about 30 miles north of Baton Rouge.
I started the farm by myself in May of 2019. I have a long history of animal agriculture and husbandry and graduated from LSU with a degree in Animal Science. My husband, John, came along in 2020. Together we raise both Katahdin sheep and Dexter cattle...along with Rex rabbits, Indian Runner ducks, spoiled Border Collies, and way too many chickens to count.
We got started in 2019 with a few Katahdin crosses and came to love the breed. We raise both purebred Katahdins as well as a few crossbred market lambs every year. We have made it our mission to source the best Katahdin genetics that we can find and continue to build up a herd that displays great parasite-resistance, mothering abilities and exceptional size and body conformation.
Meet "Rona", who happens to be the very first ewe that we started our herd with years ago. She was a bottle lamb given to us by a dear friend to get our herd going. She is a Dorper/Katahdin cross, but she is an exceptional mother and is arguably the most low-maintenance sheep that we have. She is the matriarch of our farm and is now used to produce some of our yearly market lambs.
We added Dexter cattle to our farm earlier this Spring. While we have experience with other breeds of cattle, I have always admired Dexters for their easy nature and great maternal traits, as well as their fantastic carcass characteristics. After several years of waiting and searching for the right animals to start our herd, we drove 5 hours to pick up our girls that started our journey into Dexter cattle.
